Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position is to design, plan, and steer horizontal wellbores in the Midland Basin. Requires coordination between multiple departments. Responsible for communicating during the drilling phase to and from the well site, and between other parties such as intercompany personnel, partners and subcontractor operations teams. This position must also have a strong understanding of geomechanics and the ability to build this knowledge into our drilling and completions program.

 

Major Functions and Scope:

  • Active involvement in horizontal wellbore design, planning and execution
  • Monitor drilling operations to ensure wells are drilled according to the plan
  • Prepare Geoprogs to predict geologic intervals, potential wellbore stability concerns and drilling transitions
  • Utilize geomechanics to plan the best landing intervals for drilling and completions
  • Actively involved in data acquisition, interpretation & application
  • Work with well construction team to optimize drilling and completion results
  • Apply geomechanics to help establish workflows and best practices to both drilling and completions
  • Seek and apply opportunities for continuous improvement in operations, workflows, and communications
  • Act as a mentor to other team members in best practices
  • On call for drilling operations 24/7

Qualifications

  • MS Degree in Geology, Geophysics, or related degree
  • Minimum of 8 years combined horizontal steering and/or geomechanics experience
  • Experience in unconventional resources and operations
  • Strong understanding of geomechanics required
  • Experience building geomechanical models
  • Experience with steering software required
  • Experience with Star Steer software preferred
  • PETRA or Kingdom experience required
  • Must have a proven track record in increasing operational efficiencies to both drilling and completions
  • Must be a self-starter, motivated, with good organizational & reasoning skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and willing to learn other computer applications
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-discipline professionals and individuals at all levels
